In the dance studio, why do I wear women's leggings almost every day?

The real daily life and years of experience of a dance teacher

If you enter my dance studio, you might quickly notice one thing:
Whether it's during classes, rehearsals, demonstrating movements, or after class when organizing music, I wear women's leggings almost every day.

Many students, when they first meet me, will ask the same question:
"Teacher, do you have many pairs of exactly the same pants?"

I usually smile and shake my head. In fact, it's not the same. Over the years, during my dance teaching and training, I gradually developed a habit - whenever there is a need for prolonged physical activity, I almost always choose leggings.

The reason is quite simple:
Dancing is a very demanding activity when it comes to freedom of movement.

When you have to do hundreds of squats, stretches, rotations and jumps every day, the comfort, stability and suitability of a pair of pants for exercise become extremely important.

Many people treat leggings as just regular sports pants, but for us who deal with our bodies' movements every day, a truly good women's leggings is actually part of the training gear.

A dance teacher's day begins with a pair of leggings.

My day usually starts very early.
At 7:30 in the morning, I will first do a set of basic stretches in the empty classroom.
If a dance teacher doesn't "wake up" their body first, it's very likely that he/she will get injured during the teaching process.

The floor is still cold. The city outside has just woken up. I turn the music down very low.
At that moment, what I care about most is the pair of leggings I'm wearing.

Why?

Because the stretching movements in the morning are very slow and very deep:

  • Forward bend in sitting position
  • Hip-opening stretches
  • Deep bow step
  • Spinal rotation

If the elasticity of the pants is insufficient, you will immediately feel the constriction.
If the fabric is too hard, the body may even unconsciously tighten up.

Many students who are just starting to learn dancing will wear regular sports pants for class. As a result, they start to pull on the legs of the pants after just a few movements.
I usually tell them:
If you plan to practice dancing for a long time, a suitable pair of women's leggings can completely transform your training experience.

My judgment on women's leggings actually stems from many years of teaching experience.

The dance teacher has a certain professional habit -

We will observe.

Not only will we observe the students' movements, but we will also pay attention to how the clothing is presented during the movements.

Over the years, I have seen many different types of leggings, from basic styles to more elaborate branded designs. Sometimes students would come to class wearing their newly bought pants, and I could almost determine within ten minutes whether they were suitable for dancing.

The reason is actually quite simple.
The dance movements will magnify all the flaws of the clothing.

For example:
Squatting
If the structure of the waist is unstable, the pants will immediately start to slip down.

Leg extensions
If the fabric lacks elasticity, the thighs will be pulled noticeably.

Floor movements
If the stitches are rough, the friction will be very noticeable.
These details may not be obvious in daily life, but in a dance studio, they are magnified infinitely.

A truly good women's leggings should first address the issue of "freedom of movement"

Dance is a process of constantly expanding the boundaries of the body.

Many of these movements may seem graceful, but in fact they require extremely high levels of body control.

For example:
Simple ones are:
Developpé (Control raising of the leg)
As the legs are lifted higher, the thigh muscles will keep exerting force.
If the fabric of the leggings is not soft enough or lacks sufficient elasticity, the movement will be significantly restricted.

And also:
Grand plié (Deep Squat)
These are the basic movements of many dances.
When the body is fully in a squat position, the fabric of the waist and the buttocks must remain both stable and flexible simultaneously.
I once had a student come to class wearing a new pair of leggings. When she was doing the third squat, she stopped because the leggings kept sliding down.
She was constantly adjusting her waist during that class.
Since then, she has never dared to buy sports pants at will again.

Why are high-waisted women's leggings becoming more and more common in the dance scene?

If you observe the dance studio, you will notice that most people are wearing high-waisted leggings.
The reason is actually quite practical.
There are many core movements in the dance, such as:

  • Rotation
  • Maintaining balance
  • Jump and land

If there is not enough wrap-around sensation around the waist, the body will lack stability.

The high-waist design can provide support to the core area while not restricting breathing.

When I demonstrate the movements in class, I almost always wear high-waisted pants. Because if the pants start to slide, your concentration will be disrupted.

Once I noticed a student wearing a pair of leggings with a very stylish design, and the lines were very clean. She said she found it on Duskyonder. That pair of pants performed very stably in class and did not have any fraying when doing floor exercises.

At that moment, I realized that many brands have begun to seriously study the structural aspects of their products, rather than just focusing on the design of the appearance.

One thing dance teachers pay special attention to is: whether the fabric is "safe"

In the dance studio, we often say a word:
“squat proof”

In simple terms, it's about whether anything shows during a squat.

Because the dance movements cause the fabric to be fully stretched, if the weaving pattern is not dense enough, the color will noticeably fade.

I once witnessed a very embarrassing scene.

A new student came to class wearing light grey leggings. When she was doing squats in front of the mirror, the fabric became clearly see-through to everyone in the room.

She herself later realized that she felt extremely embarrassed after that class ended.
From then on, I would always remind the students:

When buying women's leggings, be sure to test the fabric.

A truly high-quality fabric can still maintain its covering property even when stretched.

The suture structure is a crucial detail that many people overlook.

If you only wear leggings on a daily basis, you might rarely pay attention to the stitching.
But for the dance teacher, the stitching almost determines the level of comfort.
Why?

Because many actions involve:

  • Thigh rubbing
  • Ground rolling
  • Knee support

If the inner seam of the pants is too rough, it will rub against the skin during long training sessions.

I used to have a pair of leggings. They looked nice on the outside, but the stitching was exactly on the inner side of the thighs. After each two classes, there would be a noticeable friction sensation on the skin.

Later, I came to realize:
Good women's leggings usually feature a smooth structure design, minimizing the presence of stitching as much as possible.

When you are concentrating on the action, you won't even be aware of the existence of your pants.

Why have women's leggings started to become a part of daily wardrobes?

Over the past few years, I have noticed a very obvious change.
Previously, leggings were mostly seen in:

  • Gymnasium
  • Yoga Studio
  • Dance Studio

Now it often appears on the city streets.
Once I was queuing up for a table at a coffee shop, and all three girls at the adjacent tables were wearing leggings.

They might have just finished exercising, or they might just be doing their daily outfit routine.
This change is actually quite natural.

When a piece of clothing simultaneously possesses:

  • Comfortable
  • Flexible
  • Concise

It will gradually integrate into daily life.
Sometimes I would go directly to the supermarket to buy groceries after class.
The dance outfit can be worn as a regular outfit by simply adding a coat.
Some brands with simple designs, such as the one my student mentioned - duskyonder - have actually begun to blur the boundaries between sportswear and everyday wear.

One thing that many people tend to overlook when buying women's leggings

When many people choose leggings, they only consider two factors:
Appearance
Price

But what truly determines the experience is the structure.
For example:
Fabric density
Determines whether it allows light to pass through.

The structure of the waist
Determines stability.

Sewing line design
Determines whether it is comfortable to wear for a long time.

The dance teacher has to wear the sports clothes for eight to ten hours every day, so these details are magnified infinitely.

If a pair of leggings can handle a full day of teaching, then they are usually not likely to let people down in daily life either.

Why do I always think that leggings are the most honest clothing?

After teaching dance for so many years, I gradually discovered an interesting thing.
Some clothes can "alter" the body through cutting.

But women's leggings hardly hide anything.

Your movements, postures and strength will all be presented in a realistic manner.

And precisely because of this, it has become so important in the world of dance.

When I stand in front of the mirror demonstrating the movements, a pair of the right leggings enables me to fully focus on teaching rather than on the clothes themselves.

Sometimes students would ask me:
"Teacher, how do you determine whether a pair of leggings is good or not?"

My answer is actually quite simple.

If throughout the entire class you never thought about it at all -
then it's probably a great pair of leggings.

Final Note: One Little Thing That Dance Taught Me

Over the years of teaching dance, I have seen many students constantly searching for the right sports equipment that suits them.

Some people try different brands, and gradually they will find the style they like. Sometimes I also listen to students sharing the brands they have discovered recently. For example, some people will mention duskyonder, while others prefer traditional sportswear brands.

But no matter which option is chosen, one thing remains unchanged.

The women's leggings that truly suit you are often not the most expensive ones, nor are they necessarily the most fashionable ones.

It is simply just right for your body, your lifestyle rhythm, and your way of moving.

When you can freely stretch, rotate and breathe without worrying about whether the clothes fit properly, you will understand -

A good pair of leggings is never just a fashion item.
It is more like a part of your body.
