Why I Swapped My Pilates Set for a Sports Jumpsuit—and Never Looked Back

If someone had told me three years ago that I would give up an entire row of Pilates gear in my closet to become obsessed with a one-piece sports jumpsuit, I probably would have laughed out loud. 

After all, like many women who practice Pilates, I once firmly believed that a sports top paired with high-waisted leggings was the standard outfit. The colors had to match, the cuts had to complement each other, and ideally, it should make legs look longer, waists slimmer, and butts more perky. 

Later on, I realized that the time I spent organizing my clothes and adjusting my waistband was actually more than the time I devoted to focusing on my breathing and movement control. 

At that moment, I began to reconsider a question: 

Should sportswear truly serve the body, or the act of exercise itself?

Pilates taught me the first thing: comfort is more important than perfection. 

When I first started practicing Pilates, my main focus was on appearance. 

Is the reflection in the mirror good enough? 

Is the waistline prominent enough? 

Do my legs look long enough? 

But as practice time increases, I've found that what truly affects training quality is often not these factors. 

Whether a piece of clothing will ride up during movement. 

Will it slide during the Teaser exercise? 

Will hip joint movement be restricted during Side Kick? 

Once your body becomes more sensitive, you'll have entirely different demands when it comes to clothing.

To be honest, I don't think this is an either-or choice. 

I still have quite a few Pilates sets in my closet. 

Different choices are made depending on the situation. 

I would choose the Pilates Set in the following situations:  

  • Training in hot weather  
  • Outdoor activities  
  • High-intensity cardio workouts  
  • When I want to freely mix and match different colors 

The biggest advantage of a two-piece set is its flexibility. 

You can freely mix and match according to your mood for the day. 

I would choose the Sports Jumpsuit for the following situations:  

  • Pilates class  
  • Yoga practice  
  • Barre training  
  • Stretch and recovery day  
  • Going straight to the studio after a long commute 

Because these situations place greater emphasis on body control and comfort. 

Rather than sweating heavily. 

In these cases, a one-piece design typically provides a more stable experience. 

What do I value most when choosing a sports jumpsuit? 

After trying many styles over the years, I've come up with several highly practical criteria. 

Fabric elasticity 

Pilates exercises often involve bending and stretching the spine. 

If the elasticity is insufficient. 

Actions will be restricted. 

The ideal state is a four-way stretch fabric. 

Clothing that moves with the body, rather than forcing the body to conform to it. 

Crotch design 

This is a detail that many people tend to overlook. 

When performing squats, bridges, or leg-opening movements. 

The crotch construction directly affects comfort. 

Tightness can cause a pulling sensation. 

A poor fit in this area can easily cause bunching. 

Proper three-dimensional tailoring makes movements much more natural. 

Shoulder strap stability 

If the shoulder strap keeps slipping off. 

The entire class will be interrupted. 

I usually prefer wide shoulder straps or crossback designs.

Many people mistakenly believe that the tighter the fit, the slimmer they appear. 

Actually, it's not. 

Excessive compression can affect breathing. 

Breathing is precisely one of the most important aspects of Pilates training. 

I prefer designs that offer support while still allowing for comfortable space.

The difference a good sportswear can make is greater than you might imagine. 

Last winter, I hit a training plateau.
