Flare Leggings Outfit Ideas: Tops, Shoes and Layers

Which tops and shoes should you wear with flare leggings? The most useful starting point is the pair you own: its length and the width of the flare will affect how the rest of the outfit comes together.

Build from the shoes upward. Check how the hem falls, then choose the shape you want above it. Compare a fitted top with a relaxed one to decide how much volume you want through the torso and hips.

Choose the shoes with the leggings on

Try your usual sneakers first and look at the outfit from the side as well as the front. Notice how much of the toe is visible, whether fabric gathers over the shoe and whether the back of the hem reaches the floor.

If you want to compare a second pair, keep the top unchanged. A wider toe or thicker sole may alter the way the flare falls; seeing the shoes with the pants on tells you more than choosing by the shoe's style name.

Walk across the room before deciding. A hem that looks clear of the floor when you stand still may move differently as you step. If it drags in both pairs, reconsider the pants' length rather than continuing to add sole height. The shoes should be a pair you want to wear, too.

Once the hem works with your shoes, keep that combination on while you choose the top.

Give the top half a clear direction

For a simple, defined outfit, try a fitted tee or tank with the flares and your chosen sneakers. The close-fitting top continues the shape through the torso, leaving the flare as the main change in outline. If you need a layer, try a short jacket: it adds another shape above the pants without covering most of the leg.

For a looser outfit, start with a relaxed tee and try a shirt worn open over it. This adds more fabric through the torso and hips, so look at the whole outline before adding another layer. If the tee and shirt gather together more than you like, keep the tee and leave off the shirt. You can retain the looser shape without stacking two relaxed pieces.

Compare color where the hem meets the shoe

With colorblock flares, look at the fabric immediately beside the shoe as well as the main color of the pants. A contrast panel at the lower leg changes which color your footwear sits against.

The Dualis Halo Flared Leggings, for example, have contrast lower-leg panels. For less color contrast at the hem, try shoes close to the panel's shade; to make the shoe more noticeable, try a contrasting color. Compare what you already own while keeping the top unchanged. The top does not need to match the shoes.

Keep the combination that works as a whole

Settle the shoes and hem first, then choose a fitted top for a closer outline above the flare or a relaxed top for more volume. Add a layer for coverage or warmth if you need one. Take a short walk in the finished outfit to confirm the hem still clears the floor with the shoes you chose.
